If you follow the Humans of Dublin Facebook page you are aware that it is chock-full of inspiring, heartfelt, emotional and wonderful tales from ‘ordinary’ people.

But while most posts tug at our heartstrings, every so often they give us one that gives us a proper giggle.

In the most recent entry, a security man talks about trying to keep ‘grannies’ with sticky fingers from taking off with half the Ilac Shopping Centre in their purses!

The man – who has worked as a security man for over 20 years – said that it was the toughest job he ever had!

‘We didn’t stop for a minute. Grannies were the ones who made us work. They actually do all the stealing, like you wouldn’t believe just how many cheeky old ladies out there. And you have to try to get the stuff back off them rather than…you know?

‘You don’t want to bring them to court like, you would spend more time there than on the floor. I had to work so much because you can’t send a 20-year-old security guy to an elderly lady to deal with, so I was the one who had to take care of most of them.’

You’d hide a lot under that hat!

‘There were grannies in their late 70s; I remember getting stuff back from them as a successful day. I was so relieved when they sent me here; it feels more or less like a retirement, I’m telling you!’
